If you’ve recently booked a hotel room online, claims like “ONLY 1 LEFT!” or “FLASH DEAL! ACT NOW” probably sound familiar. Taking a while to decide? Oops, “JUST MISSED IT!”
Are hotel rooms actually in such high demand? An abundance of evidence demonstrates they’re not. Instead, online booking agencies appear to be artificially inflating demand to induce a false sense of urgency in consumers. These companies are hoping consumers will feel pressured to book quickly (and via their own profitable commission-based booking websites). In reality, there seems to be no rush at all–hotels rarely fill all of their rooms. And that room you’re looking for? It’s likely not the only one left.
Clarkson Law Firm is here to protect consumers against advertising claims like “ONLY 1 LEFT” or “YOU JUST MISSED IT” when they are used to falsely represent hotel room availability online. When we called hotels to ask about the rooms advertised as nearly “sold out,” we found that there were plenty of rooms available, contrary to the travel websites’ claims.
Why would the travel agencies, in all-caps, lie about the availability of rooms? To create a sense of panic and coerce consumers into purchasing a room at the advertised price.
As it turns out, many travel booking agencies appear to practice this form of deceptive marketing. Have you recently booked a hotel on Priceline.com, booking.com, or the like?
